There’s nothing quite like a Christmas story to tug at your heart and put you in the right frame of mind for Christmas. Here are a few of our favorite Christmas books in case you’re looking for a new one to read this year:

A traditional Folktale
This is my absolute favorite Christmas story and a great read-aloud picture book. It tells of 3 trees who dream of being cut down and turned into great things (great, in the eyes of the world). Instead, they are turned into things that become integral to the life of Jesus Christ: a manger, a fishing boat, and a cross. I can’t read this story without crying. It is beautifully written and the message is just so wonderful.

This is another great picture book. It’s about a fictitious boy who makes the manger that Jesus would lie in when he was born. The boy learns that we each have special gifts and how those gifts can be used for good.
by Thomas S. Monson
This is a true story that happened to Thomas S. Monson when he was a boy. It is touching to see how his mother guides him to find the true spirit of Christmas in giving.
by Jason F. Wright
This is a chapter book . . . not a quick read to the kids, but worth the time spent. For myself, I read it years ago and then told the kids a brief version of the story to kick off saving in our own Christmas Jar that we gave away at Christmas.
by Thomas S. Monson
This is a beautiful picture book story to help me explain to my kids (as they reach the point where they stop believing in Santa) how we can all play a part in being Santa by giving to others . . . especially those in need.
And just for fun . . . if you ever come across the book “Santa’s First Flight” by Sam Beeson, it is my favorite fun Christmas book about Santa Claus. I can’t find it in stores anymore and haven’t ever found it in a library. The illustrations are great and the story is so unique and fun!
What are your family favorite Christmas books? I’d love to add to my collection and have some more beautiful Christmas stories to share with my kids, so leave me your favorites in the comments!
