Moving Hacks

I love learning clever things from others.  My sister and brother-in-law were moving this week and I got to help them get ready.  We’ve moved many, many times in our married years but usually they are short moves.  Our two cross-country moves were handled by a moving company though my husband’s job.  So, I usually just throw things together for the short move.  Example:  The last move we made was less than a mile and the move before that was about 1/4 of a mile.  But my sister, who is moving from Colorado to Arizona, had some great tips.  Here they are:

1.  Plastic wrapping stuff:  I don’t know what its called but she uses a ton of this stuff.  We picked it up at Home Depot and they had the short roll on the handle and a giant roll.  She said the giant rolls are hard to manage on your own so she prefers the short roll.  She uses this to completely wrap around anything with drawers so she doesn’t have to tape the drawers shut or pull them out.  She just wraps it up and the plastic sticks to itself.  Brilliant!

2.  Fry boxes:  Apparently the boxes that french fries are delivered in are awesome for packing.  They’re a great medium sized box and really sturdy.  We made a trip to Chick-Fil-A during their non-peak hours and just asked for fry boxes for moving & they gladly hooked us up!

3.  Yellow duct tape:  I usually just write on the boxes whats inside of them.  But my sister uses yellow duct tape for a label on both the top of the box and on the wide side and then writes with the sharpie on that.  Its super easy to spot since its bright against the box and having the label on the side of the box helps a lot when they are stacked up and you need to know what is in that box that’s underneath everything else.
