Completed Lapbook
(Yes, it is slightly different than the one in the tutorial – I cut things down a bit and this one has a different pic on the front – just liked the look of the whole thing better. )

My husband and I were recently called as primary teachers and I am loving the chance to teach children again. A few weeks ago, I started thinking forward to 2015 and looking for ideas to get the kids in our class more engaged and really taking the lessons home with them as we move into the manual on the New Testament. I found a cute idea on Pinterest for a New Testament Lapbook – I loved it! But there were a few problems: I wanted to keep costs low and she was charging $20 for the printables to make the cute lapbook. I wanted the kids to have something to add to their book every week and I wanted it to be taken from approved lessons. So, I decided to make my own! It was a lot of work to go through the lessons for the entire year and find a handout to add to the lapbook for every lesson and come up with a book layout, but I did it! I didn’t have to buy anything to make these since I used only supplies I already had on hand! And if you want to do it it, you’re welcome to use any of these ideas or the whole thing to make your own. Its a lot of steps and might look like way too big of a project but it really is simple once you do the first one – I’m making 10!
Supplies Needed to make 1 Lapbook:
1 file folder
2 colored cardstock
5 white cardstock
1 9×12 envelope
1 colorful print paper (optional)
1 thank you card
1 3×4 picture of Christ
packing tape
double sided tape (optional)
eyelets and yarn/string (optional)
Printouts:
Colored cardstock – print page one and then flip over to print page 2 on the back
Colored cardstock(2) – print page one and then flip over to print page 2 on the back
White cardstock –
pockets, print and cut in half to make pockets
pocket and reading chart – cut just below the reading chart, this pocket with be a little shorter than the others
testimony page – this will print 2 on a single page which is great if you’
additional items – cut out each section and trim as close as desired to make it fit in its spot
Step by Step instructions:

Use packing tape to make a pocket on the bottom of each colored cardstock page. Tape it to the very bottom of the colored cardstock and on each side.

Add your first page to your lapbook by using the packing tape to tape it to the side crease of the folder.

Attach the other page to the crease on the other side of the book, front and back, just as you did the last one.

Open both colored cardstock pages so you have an open space on the file folder between them. Tape down the reading chart at the top of that middle section.

Fold up the book and turn it over so you’re looking at the back side. Take the 9×12 folder and cut off the closure flap (and a little more if you don’t want it to stick up over the top of the folder).

Turn the lapbook back over to the front. Trim 1 1/2 inch off the side of the cute print paper that you’ll be using (so it is 7inches across), then cut it in half lengthwise and tape it to the front flaps of the lapbook.

Tape all the pieces to the front in the order that you want. Notice that 2 of the pieces the kids will need to write on, so don’t put tape over those areas. (I used double stick tape to fix the picture of Christ, but you could use glue or packing tape.)

Fix the remaining items to the two inside flaps, attaching the thank you card just like you attached the colored cardstock pages earlier.
Give the kids their lapbook on the day you introduce them. You could modify this and start this at any point in the year if you don’t have them ready for the first week of class. Have them bring their lapbook to class each week to add to it; the blank lists already taped to the lapbook will be used along with lessons during the year, so be sure to tell them not to fill anything out until they’re told to. Here’s the list of lessons and their corresponding handout:
Lesson List
Lesson 1:
Memorize the books of the New Testament – the first page gets divided into three pieces, as instructions for 3 different kids. Each child needs their own copy of page 2. Include the first page instructions in a ziploc bag and then let them cut the 2nd page into word strips either in class or at home. All items will go in the ziploc bag together and inside the “memorize me” folder.
Memorize the 8th Article of Faith – the first page gets divided into five pieces, as instructions for 5 different children. The 2nd page gets divided into the word strip page for 2 different children. Include the first page instructions in a ziploc bag and then let them cut the 2nd page into word strips either in class or at home. All items will go in the ziploc bag together and inside the “memorize me” folder.
Lesson 2:
Memorize John 15:13 – the first page gets divided into 6 strips, as instructions for 6 children. The 2nd page gets divided into the word strip page for 2 different children. Include the first page instructions in a ziploc bag and then let them cut the 2nd page into word strips either in class or at home. All items will go in the ziploc bag together and inside the “memorize me” folder.
Lesson 3:
John the Baptist Quiz – this page gives you 6 copies of the John the Baptist quiz that includes the scripture for them to find each answer – cut out before class and give them to the children to put in their Quiz Me pocket.
Lesson 4:
Memorize the 1st Article of Faith – the first page gets divided into 6 pieces, as instructions for 6 different children. The 2nd page gets divided into the word strip page for 2 different children. Include the first page instructions in a ziploc bag and then let them cut the 2nd page into word strips either in class or at home. All items will go in the ziploc bag together and inside the “memorize me” folder.
Lesson 5:
Print the map included in the lesson! Use the map to do enrichment activity #3 together as a class, labeling the places where Jesus lived. The children can then add the map to their “Maps” pocket in the lapbook.
Lesson 6:
Baptism Quiz – this page gives you 6 copies of the Baptism Quiz using scriptures to find the answers to the questions taken directly from the lesson – cut out before class and give them to the children to put in their Quiz Me pocket.
Lesson 7:
What If game – Print one page per child. Prepare one game for each child in advance or have them cut up their own game by cutting the directions off the top and then cutting the “what if” statements into word strips, folding them in half (with the words inside so they can’t be seen) and putting them in a snack or sandwich size ziploc bag or envelope. Put the finished game in the Games/Activities pocket.
Lesson 8:
Church & Temple Matching Game – Print two copies of this page for each child on cardstock to make a matching game (if printed on regular paper, they’ll be able to see through it). Cut out the pictures ahead of time into squares and put them in a sandwich or snack ziploc bag. The children can color the pictures, if desired.
Lesson 9:
Use this link to make a set of flannel board story pictures for each child to go with this lesson. I would print a copy of the pictures on cardstock and a copy of the “story” on regular paper for each child. They can cut out their own pictures or you can cut them out ahead of time for them. You can stick the pictures and story in an envelope, baggie, or paper clip them together. The large pocket on the back/outside of the lapbook is where they will store their flannel board stories.
Lesson 10:
Make a Beatitudes Matching Game for each child, printing this page on a piece of cardstock, one per child. They can cut out the pieces or you can cut them ahead of time. Have a small envelope or ziploc bag for the pieces to go inside. You will also want to print out a copy of the game instructions for each child (there are 5 sets of instructions on one page). Have the children store the matching game in the games/activities pocket.
Lesson 11:
Memorize James 1:5 – the first page gets divided into 6 pieces, as instructions for 6 different children. The 2nd page gets divided into the word strip page for 2 different children. Include the first page instructions in a ziploc bag and then let them cut the 2nd page into word strips either in class or at home. All items will go in the ziploc bag together and inside the “memorize me” folder.
Lesson 12:
Use this link to make a set of flannel board story pictures for each child to go with this lesson. I would print a copy of the pictures on cardstock and a copy of the “story” on regular paper for each child. They can cut out their own pictures or you can cut them out ahead of time for them. You can stick the pictures and story in an envelope, baggie, or paper clip them together. The large pocket on the back/outside of the lapbook is where they will store their flannel board stories.
Lesson 13:
Memorize John 3:14 – the first page gets divided into 6 pieces, as instructions for 6 different children. The 2nd page gets divided into the word strip page for 2 different children. All items will go in the ziploc bag together and inside the “memorize me” folder.
Lesson 14:
IF THE KIDS AREN’T IN THE HABIT OF BRINGING THEIR LAPBOOKS TO CLASS, SEND A REMINDER TO THE PARENTS THAT THEY’LL NEED THEIR LAPBOOKS IN CLASS THIS WEEK. As part of class, come up with some ideas of things the kids can do on Sundays to keep the Sabbath Day holy. Fill out the card that is already attached to their lapbook titled: Things I can do to keep the Sabbath Day holy.
Lesson 15:
Print out a Miracles of Jesus booklet that uses the pictures referenced in the lesson. Cut the pages in half and staple together in the left hand corner to create the booklet. The blank lines on the bottom of the picture pages are for the kids to write the story in the picture in their own words. The booklet can be stored in the back pocket of the lapbook along with the flannel board story figures.
Lesson 16:
Memorize Matthew 17:20 – the first page gets divided into 6 pieces, as instructions for 6 different children. The 2nd page gets divided into the word strip page for 2 different children. Include the first page instructions in a ziploc bag and then let them cut the 2nd page into word strips either in class or at home. All items will go in the ziploc bag together and inside the “memorize me” folder.
Lesson 17:
Using the Hidden Messages puzzle in the lesson manual, I created 3 more hidden messages puzzles to send home with the children. The three puzzles are all on one page, so just print one copy for each child and they can put it in the games/activities pocket of their lapbook.
Lesson 18:
Print a copy of the Jesus Christ Heals a Blind Man flannel board story for each child. I print the figures on cardstock and cut them out and put in an envelope along with the story printed on regular paper also put in the envelope. The children can add this to the pocket on the back of the lapbook and can use it to share today’s lesson with their families.
Lesson 19:
Print out a lost sheep game for each child. If available, print on cardstock and laminate for extra durability. The lost sheep game can go in their games/activites pocket.
Lesson 20:
Print a copy of the Good Samaritan for each child. I print the figures on cardstock and cut them out and put in an envelope along with the story printed on regular paper also put in the envelope. The children can add this to the pocket on the back of the lapbook and can use it to share today’s lesson with their families.
Lesson 21:
REMIND THE CHILDREN TO BRING THEIR LAPBOOKS THIS WEEK! Have the children use the card that is attached to the lapbook as a thank you card, to write a list of some of the things they want to remember to thank Heavenly Father for. Bring some extra notecards for those that might forget to bring their lapbook to class.
Lesson 22:
Give each child a Forgiveness Quiz to add to their Quiz Me pocket. The page can be divided into one quiz each for 6 children.
Lesson 23:
Print a copy of the Good Shepherd for each child. I print the figures on cardstock and cut them out and put in an envelope along with the story printed on regular paper also put in the envelope. The children can add this to the pocket on the back of the lapbook and can use it to share today’s lesson with their families.
Lesson 24:
Print copies of fake dollar bills (at least 10 pages per child – 30 one dollar bills) and give each child a stack of bills in an envelope. On the outside of the envelope, write instructions: Practice calculating your tithing by counting out dollar bills and setting aside 1 dollar out of every 10.
Lesson 25:
REMIND THE CHILDREN TO BRING THEIR LAPBOOKS THIS WEEK! Use the picture of the lamp inside their lapbooks to write down ways for them to add oil to their lamps – have them write their ideas around and on top of the lamp picture. Bring extra copies of the lamp picture (found in the manual) for anyone who forgets their lapbook.
Lesson 26:
REMIND THE CHILDREN TO BRING THEIR LAPBOOKS THIS WEEK! Use the “my talents” list in their lapbooks to write a list of the talents that they have. You might contact their parents in the week before class to help you come up with a list in case the kids get stuck trying to figure out what their talents might be. Bring some extra notecards for kids to use if they forget to bring their lapbooks.
Lesson 27:
REMIND THE CHILDREN TO BRING THEIR LAPBOOKS THIS WEEK! Use the “ways I can serve” list in their lapbooks to have them write a list of things they can do to serve. You can brainstorm as a class or have them come up with their own individual list. Bring some extra notecards for kids to use if they forget to bring their lapbooks.
Lesson 28:
Print & cut out a matching game for each child (colored paper or cardstock works best) and put it in a small ziploc bag for the children to add to their games/activities pocket. Included on the 2nd page are directions to add to the bag.
Lesson 29:
Enrichment idea #4 at the end of the lesson talks about the sacrament hymns. Give each child a mini sacrament songbook with some sacrament songs (from the hymn book & children’s songbook) they can learn/read through to help them have a better understanding about the sacrament. Make one copy per child and then cut out the three songs and front cover and staple together into a booklet.
Lesson 30:
Memorize John 3:16 – The first page gets divided into 6 strips, as instructions for 6 children. The 2nd page gets divided into the word strip page for 2 different children. Include the first page instructions in a ziploc bag and then let them cut the 2nd page into word strips either in class or at home. All items will go in the ziploc bag together and inside the “memorize me” folder.
Lesson 31:
Memorize the 3rd Article of Faith – The first page gets divided into 6 strips, as instructions for 6 children. The 2nd page gets divided into the word strip page for 2 different children. Include the first page instructions in a ziploc bag and then let them cut the 2nd page into word strips either in class or at home. All items will go in the ziploc bag together and inside the “memorize me” folder.
Lesson 32:
Memorize the 2nd Article of Faith – The first page gets divided into 6 strips, as instructions for 6 children. The 2nd page gets divided into the word strip page for 2 different children. Include the first page instructions in a ziploc bag and then let them cut the 2nd page into word strips either in class or at home. All items will go in the ziploc bag together and inside the “memorize me” folder.
Lesson 33:
Enrichment idea #4 at the end of the lesson lists 3 special songs about the resurrection. Give each child a resurrection mini songbook with these songs (from the hymn book & children’s songbook) they can learn/read through to help them have a better understanding about the resurrection. Make one copy per child and then cut out the three songs and front cover and staple together into a booklet.
Lesson 34:
Give each child a Feed My Sheep Quiz to add to their Quiz Me pocket. The page can be divided into one quiz each for 6 children.
Lesson 35:
IF THE KIDS AREN’T IN THE HABIT OF BRINGING THEIR LAPBOOKS TO CLASS, SEND A REMINDER TO THE PARENTS THAT THEY’LL NEED THEIR LAPBOOKS IN CLASS THIS WEEK. As part of class, have the children fill in the Missions of Christ chart that is included in their lapbooks.
Lesson 36:
Cut the page into 3 bookmarks and give one to each child. The bookmark uses the statement in Enrichment Activity #4.
Lesson 37:
REMIND THE CHILDREN TO BRING THEIR LAPBOOKS THIS WEEK! Give them time to write their testimonies on the “my testimony” part of their lapbook or have them do it at home.
Lesson 38:
Memorize the 13th Article of Faith – The first page gets divided into 3 strips, as instructions for 3 children. The 2nd page is the word strips for 1 child. Include the first page instructions in a ziploc bag and then let them cut the 2nd page into word strips either in class or at home. All items will go in the ziploc bag together and inside the “memorize me” folder.
Lesson 40:
Print out the Missionary Matching Game for the children to add to their games/activities folder. If you want you can make extra copies so you can do one together in class so they have the correct answers and then they can take a blank copy home to quiz their siblings.
Lesson 41:
If you put together your lapbooks exactly like I did, above the mini songbooks pocket will be a space with a horizontal line. Print out a set of triangles for each child and have them cut out and glue one set of triangles above the line and one set below the line, as directed in the lesson. The triangles will be small to make them all fit so they can write the words either on the triangle or above/below the triangle. Note: Since the triangles will be small, I would suggest printing them on cardstock for more stability. Also, one set of triangles for each child equals 2 rows of triangles on the printout – one printout will have enough for 4 children.
