I don’t know about you, but my kids don’t need a whole lot for Christmas this year. They really have all the toys and clothes they need. And I don’t need extra stuff cluttering up the house. So, Christmas shopping becomes difficult. But I’m not on the “give experiences” bandwagon in quite the way that I’m seeing out there. For one thing, to give a ticket to an event or season passes to 5 kids (plus buying 2 extra because the parents will have to be the ones to take them) can get quite expensive, much more than what I am willing to spend on Christmas — unless you’re giving just one thing and calling it good. My second issue is that I love for my kids to have gifts to open and enjoy on Christmas day. For Christmas morning to be: “Here’s 3 tickets that we can use to go do something in the future” . . . am I the only one that doesn’t see that as fun? So, along with a couple, just for fun things, I am giving the gift of learning this Christmas. And we’re not just talking about books.
There are so many things to learn and do and Christmas is a great opportunity to give kids things that they can use to learn something new. Barnes and Noble has some great box kits for this or you can find things on Amazon or even make your own kits. Here’s some of the learning gifts that I love. This Christmas, your kids can learn:
- Crocheting
- Calligraphy
- Knot tying
- Yo-yo tricks
- Magic tricks
- Juggling
- Knitting
- Origami
- Card tricks
- Hair braiding
- Cooking
- Embroidery
- Wood carving
Put the items needed together as a gift or just buy a kit and then have the “experience” of spending time working together on learning a new skill. Giving the Gift of Learning is the way to go, in my book.
